Sherkin Island where I study is a small , lightly populated island located just off Ireland’s southwest coast in West Cork directly opposite the small fishing village of Baltimore. There are ferries daily from Baltimore, taking just 10 minutes. Sherkin Island (from the Irish Inis Earcáin) is one of a number of islands in Roaringwater Bay. It has an average population of 100 people and measures 3 miles long by 1.5 miles wide (5 km by 3 km). The island has a primary school, two pubs with a hotel, B&B, community centre and a church.
The ferry that people depend on so much for there supplies all year round is called “Mystic Waters” and has been running between Baltimore and Sherkin Island five to six times a day since 1979.
It is clear to see why it has such a name.
